Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Design and Technology encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. At The St Augustine’s Academy, we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values as well as enhance and develop practical skills which will carry through each stage of their learning and beyond. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art, as well as providing examples and instances of the use and value of design in our community. The children are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness and are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers. We use the subject to raise awareness of possibilities for the future and to allow children to develop our PRIDE values.
We encourage our children to enjoy and value the curriculum we deliver. We will constantly ask the WHY behind their learning and not just the HOW. Children will know more, remember more and understand more about Design Technology and the large majority of children will achieve age related expectations. As designers, children will develop skills and attributes they can use beyond school and into adulthood.
The way pupils showcase, share and celebrate their work will best show the impact of our curriculum. Progress of our design technology curriculum is demonstrated through outcomes and the record of coverage in the process of achieving these outcomes.
