All young people should have the opportunity to live healthy and active lives. A positive experience of PE, school sport and physical activity at a young age can build a lifetime habit of participation and is central to meeting the government’s ambitions for a world-class education system.
PE, school sport and physical activity all have numerous benefits for children and young people’s physical health, as well as their mental well-being (increasing self-esteem and emotional well-being and lowering anxiety and depression), and children who are physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers. Ensuring that pupils have access to sufficient daily activity can also have wider benefits for pupils and schools, improving behaviour as well as enhancing academic achievement.
At The St Augustine’s Academy we firmly believe that PE and sport are not only a part of school life and every child’s entitlement but to also provide opportunities for them to develop future key life skills such as teamwork and resilience through an inclusive, broad and balanced curriculum. All pupils will follow the National Curriculum for PE by participating in a wide variety of activities including movement to music, gymnastics, athletics and games skills through enhancing existing skills and learning new skills. We aim to involve local community sports providers to encourage the children to access sporting activities beyond the school day and provide them with the possibilities of sporting clubs and competitions which will enable the children to be proud of the community in which they belong. This will create a sustainable impact to the children of The St Augustine’s to ensure they have a life-long love of sports and physical activity as well as making positive informed choices around health, well-being and diet.

At The St Augustine’s Academy our PE curriculum is varied to ensure that all children meet the requirements of the National Curriculum. Our children receive at least 2 hours of high-quality PE teaching using the vast outside space, two halls and excellent sporting equipment. All children have two weekly PE lessons with their class teacher and/or one lesson with a professional and qualified sports coach. This develops not only the children’s skills but also the teaching staff’s CPD in terms of their PE knowledge and ability. Children also attend weekly swimming lessons from Years 4-6. As well as participating in high quality PE lessons every week the children also have the opportunity to further these skills at after school and lunch sports clubs, thus making club links within the community. We aim to participate in inter and intra school sports competitions to promote a competitive nature of sport whilst encouraging the importance of children taking part and trying their best.
At The St Augustine’s Academy we believe one of our strengths is the broad and varied opportunities that we provide for our children. They all take part in a range of activities which enables them to find something that they really enjoy and can take through into their future life. This includes taking part in after school clubs with the outside providers that come into school, understanding the need for a balanced diet and enjoying competitions in secondary school. As a school we aspire to improve our teaching practice by providing new opportunities for the children to participate in fun and exciting sporting activities such as outdoor and adventurous activities. Using the PE and sports funding we at The St Augustine’s Academy upskill staff members by observing external sports coaches to improve the delivery of PE in our school. Through monitoring, questionnaires and teacher observations, we have recognised that assessment is an area of development within the subject. We aim to develop effective assessment strategies that will improve the children’s sporting abilities. We have improved the quality of PE through implementing a new exciting curriculum that teachers can easily deliver to a high standard and this is supported by purchasing new equipment in various sports. We believe that the hard work that we have put into PE as a school is beneficial not only to the children at St Augustine’s but also the staff who are improving their teaching practice daily.
The PE team will constantly review the timetable in school and monitor the pupil’s engagement within lessons. The staff will learn from the outside providers who are skilled in a particular area so they are then able to deliver high quality PE lessons. Both children and staff will benefit from this as it will increase their knowledge of sports, along with providing them with opportunities to improve their confidence.
When children leave our school, they will be more prepared for PE and will have developed their self confidence in playing sport. The equipment and facilities will be utilized to its full potential, allowing children to improve their coordination, fitness and general sense of wellbeing.
