Curriculum

Our Science Goals

  • The St Augustine’s Academy strives to develop pupils’ interest in and enjoyment of science. By building on children’s curiosity, our science curriculum will help to instil a positive attitude towards science in pupils.
  • Our curriculum will deliver all the requirements of the national curriculum in relation to science and cover major scientific concepts. We want our children to develop a curiosity for the world around them that will last throughout their school life and beyond.
  • By making all science lessons are purposeful, accurate and imaginative, we can ensure pupils have sufficient scientific knowledge to understand both the uses and implications of science, today and in the future, impacting on the possibilities for them in the future. This will also give pupils an appreciation of the changing nature of scientific knowledge.
  • Our curriculum develops pupils’ ability to pose questions, investigate these using correct techniques, accurately record their findings using appropriate scientific language, analyse their results and helps pupils develop the skills of prediction, hypothesising, experimentation, investigation, observation, measurement, interpretation and communication. We make links to our PRIDE values in this way, particularly with regard to independence, determination and excellence.
  • We make pupils aware of and alert to links between science and other school subjects, as well as their lives more generally with specific links to their own community.
  • We make use of our incredible outdoor spaces including large wildlife garden and school allotment

Implementation

  • The St Augustine’s Academy aims to ensure all teaching staff have expert knowledge of science, which in turn leads to effective science teaching. Where staff do not have the required knowledge, CPD is provided to support with plugging the gaps so that ineffective teaching does not disadvantage pupils.
  • Teachers enable pupils to understand key scientific concepts, presenting information clearly and promoting appropriate discussion
  • Teachers check pupils’ understanding effectively, identifying and correcting misunderstandings
  • Teachers ensure that pupils embed key concepts in their long-term memory and apply them fluently, this is done by revisiting and revising topics, and displaying previous learning and key vocabulary clearly in the classroom through a science specific display.
  • The subject curriculum that classes follow is designed and delivered in a way that allows pupils to transfer key knowledge to long-term memory; it is sequenced so that new knowledge and skills build on what has been taught before and towards defined end points. The school uses Chris Quigley milestones to clearly define the steps children need to take each year, phase and key stage
  • Science is taught for a minimum of two hours per week in KS1 & 2 and is topic based. There are cross-curricular links made throughout science teaching which keep children hooked while ensuring the strength of science teaching
  • In early years, science is taught through developing an understanding of the world using focussed and continuous provision. It is assessed through observation.

Intent

By the time children leave The St Augustine’s Academy they will:

  • Have an excellent knowledge of scientific concepts including physics, chemistry and biology
  • Continue to be curious and to question the world around them
  • Have an extensive base of scientific knowledge and vocabulary
  • Have the ability to reach clear conclusions and develop a reasoned argument to explain findings.
  • Have significant levels of originality, imagination or creativity as shown in interpretations and representations of the subject matter.
  • Have experimental, fieldwork and other scientific skills and techniques.
  • Have a passion for and commitment to science
