In Year 1, our primary focus is on developing strong phonics and reading skills. By the end of the year, children are expected to be reading at Turquoise level, so we encourage regular reading at home to support their progress. Reading forms the main part of your child’s home learning, alongside weekly spellings, which are sent home on their phonics sheet each day. Children will complete a weekly spelling test every Friday.
At the beginning of the year, children read on a one-to-one basis with an adult to develop their fluency, confidence and decoding skills. As they become more secure readers, they move into guided reading groups where the focus shifts towards developing comprehension and deeper understanding of texts.
Â
Throughout the year we look at a range of different topics, including Marvellous Me, Amazing animals, Toys, Let’s Grow, Coast to Coast and Fire! Fire!
This year PE will be taught on a Monday afternoon. Please ensure your child comes to school with the correct kit- white t-shirt, black shorts/joggers and suitable footwear.
If you have any queries, please see a member of the Year 1 team.Â
