Welcome to Year 6

A quick introduction to our year

In year 6, we are busy preparing for SATs but as well as this, we still manage to have lots of fun, learn about many exciting topics and develop lots of new skills. In science, we will learn about electricity and build our own circuits, complete many different experiments when learning about the circulatory system and find out about classifying animals when exploring evolution and inheritance. In history, we will use different sources of information to learn about World War One and Two, study the changing role of the monarchy in Britain and look in depth at what life was like in Victorian Britain. Throughout the year, we will develop our skills as artists, musicians and designers as we take on different projects relating to our topics in other subjects.

During the year, we will also continue to enhance our skills as readers and will enjoy poems, short stories and novels written by famous authors as well as new ones. We will be drawing on these ideas for our own work and spending time writing in the style of other inspiring writers and in role as characters from their stories all the while developing new skills to help us engage our reader.

In maths, we follow the White Rose scheme of work and explore a variety of fluency, problem solving and reasoning questions. The following is a breakdown of what we will be covering each term.

HOMEWORK

We ask that you listen to your child read at least five times a week and that you sign their diary each time this is completed.

Spellings will be given out each Friday and children will be tested on these the following Friday.

Times tables are an important part of the maths curriculum and therefore your child has a Times Table Rockstar account in order for them to practise these key skills both at home and at school. Login details can be found in the front of their white diaries. This is the web address: www.ttrockstars.com

Your child will also receive an arithmetic homework each week which forms a large part of the maths SATs papers and a reading comprehension to help them practice key reading skills – these are all due in each Friday.

If you have any queries, please see a member of the year 6 team. We look forward to an exciting year ahead!
